3 reasons why hashtags are important and why you need to use them on different social media platforms.

Every social media user makes use of them and knows that hashtags are important. Using them without having a hashtag strategy might be putting them at loss. Their efforts would not be yielding good results. Social Media users might not know how much they are losing engagements on social media. Whether you do it consciously or not just being on Social Media is a hidden way of marketing. The medium has changed and this is how

They may look funny combinations of words put together with a # sign before them. But they are the most organic methods of getting you, the largest visibility on social media.

What is #?

A hashtag is a tag that you put in your social media post. This post then becomes a part of the global conversations on that particular topic. A hashtag is your way to take part and contribute to that conversation.

Why Hashtags are important for your marketing efforts?

A study done by Simply Measures, states that with the use of a single hashtag you can have 12.6% more visibility (impressions) than the posts that don’t have any hashtag.

This explains how hashtags are important for your marketing efforts in an organic way (non paid ways). With the right usage of keywords, you can reach out to more people, who are not following you yet. The hashtags display your post in more galleries and explore pages. The more you stay on top of the hashtag trends the more visitors you gain.

Hashtags also build a community for your brand. You can discover your potential customers and also connect with like-minded people for possible collaborations.

Hashtags are free marketing and publicity tools.

Their benefits discussed above can be liveraged without spending any money. This makes hashtags strategy to be crucial for your marketing plans and efforts.

What Social Media Platforms use hashtags?

Instagram:

Instagram hashtags are powerful marketing tools. You can use up to 30 hashtags on a simple post. Many marketers from around the globe suggest using at least a minimum of 11 hashtags. Each hashtag on Instagram has its own explore page. It makes more important to use only the relevant hashtags only.

Facebook

The Facebook search feature is not as strong as of now. You woukd then want to reach more people through it. Sadly, that won’t be the case. Facebook search results are heavily based on the user interactions with people, pages and groups.

We recommend to use not more than of 2 hashtags on your post, if necessary. Stuffing your post with more hashtags will result in lower reach than you have expected. This is because Facebook will see this as a spam behaviour.

Twitter

Twitter was the pioneer platform to adopt the hashtag feature and make it so popular. A healthy tweeting practice includes a maximum of 2 relevant hashtags on your posts.

The Twitter trend is a popular place where you can gain more visibility all the time. Check trending hashtags and engage through them.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a visual storyboard. Having 1 or 2 hashtags on the post gives a better engagement. However, avoid using a hashtag in the title. Hashtags are important on Pinterest, there is not much research on that.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a professional network. The right hashtag can make your post ‘popular’ and get more views and engagement. However, over usage of hashtags can be avoided. It is a great platform we believe for businesses of any size & type especially ones tight on budget. We’ve blogged about it here

3 reasons why you should have different hashtags for different social media platforms

1: Each platform is different.

Each platform has a different algorithm. Each platform sees a different behavioral pattern from the users. Using the same set of hashtags will not suffice the marketing result you were aiming for. Having sais that, there is a fair amount of time & effort that goes into maintaining every social media platform. We have a blog that talks about the most popular platforms, Facebook & Instagram here.

2: People can now follow Hashtags

Besides the pages, people can now follow hashtags on Instagram and LinkedIn. It makes sense to use the relevant hashtag in your content. The hashtag that people are following on that particular social media platform. This way you will be enjoying maximum visibility and engagement.

 3: Platform constraint

Instagram allows you to use 30 hashtags on a post, whereas twitter has a limited character limit. To reuse the same content on both platforms, you need to omit all the extra hashtags on twitter. A good hashtag strategy is to use only one relevant hashtag, to bring better results.

Similarly, when we autoshare from Instagram to Facebook, all the hashtags on Facebook make the post spammy. This results in lesser visibility. IF you want to read about developing an Instagram posting rigor read it here

If you have not seen the substantial results from using the hashtags, then probably you have missed having a strategy to use them in the first place.
